A concert from American rapper Travis Scott ended in tragedy as 8 people died and dozens more were injured when a suspected drunk driver plowed through the crowd. What can be done to prevent future tragedies?

While Travis Scott was performing at the Astroworld Music Festival, 8 people were killed and many more were injured.

When attendees of Day 1 of the Astroworld music festival were crushed in a tidal wave of fans late Friday evening while rapper Travis Scott was performing, Houston Police said at least eight people were murdered and several injuries of varying severity occurred.

“We had eight verified deaths, and we had dozens of people wounded,” Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pea stated during a press conference outside NRG Park, the festival’s site, according to The Epoch Times. The event, according to Pena, was a “mass casualty incident.”

Around 50,000 people were present at Astroworld when, around 9 p.m., “the crowd began to crush towards the front of the stage, which generated some fear, and it started causing some injuries,” according to Pea. “People started to fall out and became unconscious, which added to the panic.” He went on to say that emergency responders took 17 persons to nearby hospitals, with 11 of them suffering from cardiac arrest. According to Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, several of kids sent to the hospital were barely 10 years old.

Larry Satterwhite, the Houston Police Department’s executive assistant chief, was towards the front of the throng and told reporters at a news conference that the surge came on fast and lasted “only a few minutes.”

“All of a sudden, we had multiple folks down on the ground, all of them were having some kind of cardiac arrest or medical incident.” So we began administering CPR straight away and relocating people, and that’s when I went to meet with the organizers and Live Nation, and they decided to halt the show early in the interest of public safety.” Until the medical examiner’s examination is completed, the cause of death for the eight decedents remains unclear.

Over 300 individuals were treated at the venue’s emergency field hospital, which was subsequently joined by over 55 Houston Fire Department units.

Shortly after the incident, the festival was canceled. Travis Scott was “very unhappy – he had no clue what was going on, he was on stage performing,” according to Page Six’s sources. As the mayhem unfurled in front of him, Scott proceeded to play his act. “He’s out of his mind; I’ve never heard him like that before.” “He was in tears,” said the insider.

“I adore you all.”

The Houston Police Department is investigating a possible “drug spiking” event, according to Deadline, since there were claims of random injections previous to the incident.
